Welcome to fifth grade!
I am so happy to welcome you to my English, Social Studies, and Writing class! Fifth grade is an exciting year, and I am lucky to share it with such wonderful kids.
This site will offer a small glimpse inside our classroom. Look below for general information such as class rules and homework policies. Look to the shortcut bar located at the top of the website for other helpful information such as the district calendar, helpful websites, and a simple way to contact me. Enjoy!
For more specific announcements including homework reminders, special events, and changes in weekly plans, please visit Ms. Roof's Remind101 link. Remind101 is a program that allows simple classroom reminders to be sent to your cell phone via text message without the exchange of personal information.

" The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called truth."
- Dan Rather
"I want students to be able to say these things when they leave me: I am a worthwhile person; I deserve a place on this earth; I am successful; I am ready for whatever the world throws at me- today or tomorrow."
- Roberta Ford

Class Rules
We do have a few rules to follow when we are here and they are posted right above the teacher's desk. We are asked to think of others and to consider how our actions affect those around us.
Moving up to fifth grade is an exciting time! (But it can be a little stressful, too.) Here we are expected to be ready and prepared in class.
Above all else, we must remain positive in the classroom. It is so easy to be bogged down by others, but if we look on the bright side, tough situations become challenges to be taken head on!

Homework
Our class is expected to be organized and on time! We have a homework board in the back that is written on every day! The students copy from the board and use their student planners as aides in remembering which assignments are due and on which dates. If kids miss an assignment, they will be expected to do the work and turn it in late. The student will receive a deducted grade, but a late grade is better than a 0!
Library/Reading
In class, we love to read! Reading everyday inside and outside of school is expected of our students! The students keep track of how many books they have read on their own personal reading logs located in their Reader's Notebook.
Scholastic & Accelerated Reader
The children are able to take Accelerated Reader tests during our 45 minute silent reading/reading group block. We have a computer in the classroom where the children are able to take these in a quiet environment. If you are interested in seeing if the book your child is reading is linked with an AR test, you may search a variety of titles using this link:

We have order forms sent home monthly for Scholastic book clubs. I love Scholastic! If you are interested in ordering online, rather than having your child send their form to school, our classroom code is: _____________
